Aprisionado y amenazado de muerte por los portugueses, en 1817, el joven capitán José Ignacio de Abreu y Lima conseguió fuir del cárcel, en su país, y se fue a Venezuela, donde se alistó en el ejército del Libertador, Simón Bolívar. Y en los doce años siguientes lo siguió de cerca, participando de las durísimas campañas por la independencia y de las tumultuosas primeras experiencias de gobiernos autónomos en las antiguas colonias hispanoamericanas.
Tuvo, además, una agitada vida sentimental, incluyendo un romance prohibido con una sobriña de Bolívar que lo llevó a batirse en duelo y ser de nuevo recogido a la prisión.
Ha ejercido, aún, una larga actividad intelectual como periodista, polemista e historiador, siempre al lado "del pueblo que es depreciado cada instante". Y continuó batiéndose por sus ideales progresistas hasta después de su muerte, ocurrida en 1869, a pesar de haber sido nuevamente exiliado, ya como difunto.
Totalmente basada en hechos reales, esta novela da voz a este personaje para que él relate sus aventuras y pinte un vívido retrato de Simón Bolívar, entre los americanos el que más se acercó al "optimus civiles" de Cicerón: el ciudadano ideal, el líder de su pueblo, el que lee en la oscuridad.
