Zoe is forced out of her village, separated from her family, as she joins the rest of the population of Mercer in the ten-yearly Round Up. A chance for a new life, giving everyone an equal opportunity, is how it is branded; but not everyone in Mercer is equal. Thousands of years ago a violent race of beings, the multicalia, evolved. Able to manipulate words, music and emotions they wielded great power. Now their race is forgotten, preserved only by six neglected gods. But as the fabric of time decays the gods are forced to take action once again. Targeted by Otto, the overseer of Mercer and a powerful Loculite himself, Zoe is forced to run, outlawed with her four best friends. But Otto is not her only threat. The gods are insistent that she takes on godship. However, she must overcome her human desire for power, realising what destruction she could cause as a god.

Quinn's father is dying. Zoe's life is falling apart. Both have seen far more beyond their years, and now as Quinn's father passes away, she becomes desperate. But not even an hour after he dies, Quinn is approached by an evil fairy, forcing her to capture and bring the human, Zoe, to her. If she refuses, everyone Quinn loves will die, including her kingdom. Zoe's husband is in the armed forces, thousands of miles away for long periods of time. Her job takes away the pain of loneliness for only a little while, before she returns to an empty home. She turns to the moon for help, just like she did so many years ago, wishing she could have so much more from life. But something tells her the moon fulfills its promises a little too well.
