Denki has had a hard life. Being abnormally smart might seem like a good thing, but in reality it made everyone around him bitter and full of hatred. His father especially hated his smarts and his quirk, often times beating him for things he cannot control. Broken Mask
Deku got tired of hiding all of his emotions under a mask. Tired of keeping a smile on his face despite being constantly beaten up and ridiculed. He'd kept his mask up for so long that it was fragile as glass. The day it broke was a tragic one for his old "friend" and mother, but became a beautiful opportunity for him. The villains saved him.
