This story begins with Mabel and Stratton, and when they met when they were wee little things. They had met in nursery school, and have been two peas in a pod since. They lived about 2 miles from another. Both of their families had huge ranches, and a lot of land. They couldn't remember a time they were apart. They've never spent longer than 2 days apart. They've done everything together; potty trained, learned to ride horses, feed the animals, had mud wars, pulled pranks on one another; siblings; and parents, they had matching pjs, gave each other stuffed animals, in both homes, there were plenty of pictures of the two everywhere you looked. One day they were getting ready for 4th grade, Loretta had walked into her daughters room, and said, "Mabel hunny".
"Yes, momma", mabel said back to her mother, then spun around, to face her and tilted her head to the side.
"Hunny, I'm sorry, but Stratton's gonna have to go home, Fin just rang", she said softly, then disappeared.
"Stratton, why must you leave?" she asked, once she had spun back around to face her best friend.
He had just shrugged his shoulders," just remember we can play after school", he smiled, which then drifted to Mabel's face. They left her room, and went right out the door with their arms around one another. They had jumped in the car, making goofy faces at each other and then laughed. Loretta had looked at them in the rearview mirror. She smiled sadly, her stomach was churning. They were out of the car faster than lightning. Finley, Stratton's father was already outside awaiting their arrival. Stratton ran up to his father, "Papa?" he asked, his dad looked at him sadly, "what's wrong?"
Fin knelt down and took his hat off, "I'm sorry that, I'm the one who has to tell you guys this but, Stratton buddy, we're moving....", but before he could finish Mabel ran to her mother, and was sobbing in her shirt.

... that changes everything
Sarah was starting her junior year of high school. Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a pretty average blonde haired, blue eyed, teenager. She was neither in the popular group, nor one of the many cliched outsiders. Sarah was a nobody. She liked to blend in and lay low. It was her way out of not only this town, but her house. No one knew it, but her father was a high functioning alcoholic that often took his anger out on his family. With her older sister now in college, it had turned to her more often. Laying low in general was a good strategy.
Across town, Ryan was prepping for his final year in high school. While he wasn't the stereotypical quarterback of the football team, he did fit into the popular crowd. His sports of choice included basketball and soccer, either of which might line him up for a scholarship next year. Ryan had a group of close friends and a lot of adoring acquaintances. It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either.
It might be a cliché romance, but it will be fun to see what the year and beyond holds.

This is a story I wrote years ago, or at least partially wrote. As I transcribe it here, I have tried to update it a bit and give the characters/story more depth than what I had when I was younger. Hopefully it all gets pulled together!
