Caroline Forbes and Katherine Pierce are starting their junior year in high school and when a new family comes to town everything is different. Strange things start to happen like blood bags being stolen from hospitals, people finding drained dead animals on roads and other places, and many more. Katherine and her parents drive home after a party and fall into a river, Stefan was walking by and sees the car and saves Katherine first, but by the time he could save her parents it was too late. Will Katherine find out how she survived, or will it be a mystery? Will Stefan's brother, Damon tell Katherine what happen? Will they become good friends or not because of a new threat that comes to Mystic Falls?

Katherine finally admitted why she didn't kill Ellie or Elena that they were in danger. Ellie is later kidnapped by a masked individual and held hostage by vampires. Rose admitted that she or her sister needed to be sacrificed to break the sun and moon curse. Stefan rescued Ellie. Klaus, one of the Original vampires, arrived and is now hunting Elena and Ellie, but Ellie makes a deal with Klaus's brother, Elijah, to protect her loved ones. Uncle John returns to Mystic Falls, and this comes as an unpleasant surprise to Elena, Ellie, Damon, Jenna, and Alaric. John reveals to Damon that the only way to kill an Original is with a dagger dipped in white ash. Ellie finds out that if a vampire uses the dagger, that vampire will die. Ellie stabbed herself in the stomach, and Elijah begged her to help him heal her. To prevent Ellie from dying. Damon feeds her his blood to prevent her dying in the sacrifice, much to Stefan's displeasure. Stefan tries to work a deal with Klaus to save Ellie's life. Klaus agreed to the deal to have Stefan work for him. John asked Bonnie to cast a spell on him. The next morning, John succumbs and dies.
