Welcome to Evergreen by -naiive

During winter break, a retreat welcomes 20 students from a nearby city school into Evergreen, a small friendly mountain town known for it's scenic views and cozy inns sought after for the vacation vibe. Welcomed to take part in a retreat promoting mindfulness and self-growth, the students on this trip find this as the opportunity to do everything but that. On a hike, a group of students wander out to a nearby grotto where they discover a plethora of flowers. Entranced by their beauty, they decide to take some back with them. Within hours of this event, one of their chaperones falls ill. She becomes extremely irritable and erratic with everyone she encounters in town. Soon enough, other townspeople begin to fall ill with similar symptoms and this sends a wave of panic over the town and its inhabitants. The local sheriff decides to place a quarantine on the town to avoid new people from becoming affected and preventing those who are ill from leaving and possibly spreading the mysterious malady. It seems no one from the outside world is aware of what is happening and because people are succumbing to this mysterious ailment, there is no one making it down the mountain safe enough to reach someone for help. In the news, a huge storm is forecasted, thus the kids must decide whether to forge their potential fate or take the trip down.

There is no telling exactly how life will unfold as it will. My journey seems as if it has just begun, but I understand that my journey has already taken many of years for it to unfold as it has to this point. This is only a start to a new path for me to travel. It does not render all previous paths useless, but rather, it only closes the book on one in order to open and unveil a new one in return. It is yet a continuation of a previous story, but the beginning and end of a story in of itself. It only yields itself to the true nature of the story, which is the waving in and out of all stories intertwined with each other with each passing moment. I shall reveal the stories that are hidden and guide the reader to understand the intricate stories revealed in my lifetime, at least one in particular that I find particularly intriguing. A collection of poems and short stories interwoven in a larger narrative that served as a way for me to work through burnout. The tale of Estavir is a metaphorical dive into my burned out mind as he searches for deeper meaning and climbs Mt. Sensan-Ghi filled with trials to test his heart. This is my first published work of fiction. It was conceptualised during a burnout I experienced back in 2017. With support from family, friends and a professional with whom to talk, I tried working through the burnout over the period of a year. At each stage of my journey I created a story to help me process. It's bizarre, a bit dark slightly existential and close to my heart. Please enjoy.
