Four dead former friends find each other in the Middle Ground, a sort of afterlife purgatory between the Upstairs and the Downstairs. But it's been 12 years since they've last met, none of them know how they died--or the last six years of their life--and, oh yeah, they're most likely going to the Downstairs. But then their caretaker comes to them with a proposition--they were nicest of the Middle Ground, so the Big Girl is giving them a second chance: if they survive the Road, a crazy obstacle course to the Upstairs, they will be granted asylum and be allowed to be eternally happy. If not . . . it's a Downstairs life (er, afterlife) for them. But as mysteries reveal themselves every corner of the way, and unknown obstacles suddenly appear, can the former friends still find it within themselves to work together and find a way to the Upstairs?
