Maïla et Gwen, tout comme d'autres jeunes de leurs âges n'ont jamais vu la lumière du jour, elles ne connaissent que le manoir dans lequel elles sont nées. Elles ne connaissent d'ailleurs rien au monde extérieur et vivent selon un calendrier et une horloge exposés dans ce lieu qui leurs est désormais beaucoup trop familier.
