When newt was a mere 15 and thomas 14, newt confessed how he felt to his best friend Thomas Edison on his birthday, however, not feeling the same way Thomas asks newt to promise him something, "Promise me," (...) "promise me you won't like me as more than a friend, ever." 2 years pass, they are both in eleventh grade, Thomas is 16 and newt is 17, and Thomas finds that he broke his own promise.

"He had been so stupid. That was the night he knew he liked newt. It happened right after the boy ran off. Thomas was left standing there, wondering why his heart hurt so much. That was when he realized his mistake.

But he promised newt.

And so he never said anything."
