"Tom? Am... am I a monster...?" 
The Ex-Dark Lord looked at the small boy in front of him. His ruby red eyes showing kindness and patience, mirroring the boy's beautiful emerald turquoise eyes, which showed sadness and slight fear. Tom smiled, softly. 
"No. You are not a monster. Nor a freak. You are pure... purer than any other being in this universe, Moses." 

Tom Riddle -aka: Lord Voldemort- was not vanquished when the killing curse rebounded from both of the Potter twins. Instead, the curse separated the corruption and compulsion curse from Tom, giving Tom back his sanity.
