You're in the middle of no where with a rifle aimed at the person you think could be your soul-mate. You are told by the law you must kill them or risk losing it all, including your own life. You've never actually met this person, only ever watched from afar. What do you do?

Rubies Under the Sun is a fantasy fiction set in a post-apocalyptic U.S., years after millions of people were infected by a bio-chemical explosion. The government has since rebuilt its structure-less democratic and more totalitarian-and established a law: all adults must kill at least one infected person a month to prevent the spread and to eliminate the infected. Emery is approaching his 18th birthday, and also his first law-enforced kill or risk a maximum penalty of death. Kill or be killed. After studying the infected, also called Redducs, from afar, he learns there might be more to them than just flesh eating "zombies." Will he be able to make his first kill as the law demands, or does he see a flaw in the system and choose his own path?
