"A Christmas Carol Reimagined" by Gratiana Lovelace, 2016
My fan fic "A Christmas Carol Reimagined" is the tale of a miserly middle aged man--a friend to no one--who is scared into realizing the folly of his ways when he is visited by three ghosts (past, present, and future). He then vows to be compassionate toward his fellow man and through his good deeds, he redeems himself--and he comes to know the meaning of love. My story here is my "mash up" of "A Christmas Carol" (original story by Charles Dickens) with Elizabeth Gaskell's "North & South", JRR Tolkien's (via Sir Peter Jackson's films of) "The Hobbit", and is set in the 1850's. Micah's Gift
When I was a kid I always knew Christmas was coming when my dad brought out the Christmas Count-down Case. It had 25 compartments with doors, each holding a different ornament. We would open one door each night of December while we read the serialized Christmas story from the local newspaper. As part of the #justwriteit 30 day contest, I'm bringing back that tradition with a serialized story. Each day, right up to Christmas, I'll be adding a chapter of the story. "Micah's Gift" is told from the perspective of a 15 year old boy from a family touched by tragedy and challenge. Micah will do whatever it takes to make his three year old brother's Christmas wish come true. Because of the holiday involved, there are some Christian references but this is not a religious story. Ever heard of the game secret Santa? Well for Carol and Nick this game of secret Santa changes their life for the better. Carol is living in a nightmare that is her life. The teenagers at school don't know about her abusive life outside of school and they wouldn't care since all they enjoy is bullying her and making her life a living hell more then it already is. This year her school decides that for Christmas they will play a game of secret Santa; pairing each student with another from the school one town over. There Nick attends school. Nick is the mysterious boy with an attitude that no one understands yet all the girls seem to be attracted to him like a moth is attracted to light. They don't know about his dark past or the demons he is constantly fighting within himself as all they care about are his good looks. Two people similar in many ways in need of a friend are paired in this cliche game of secret Santa. Where they send letters of advise and maybe even some confessions to one another. Along the way they seem to click with one another without actually knowing who the person behind the pen is. They have 25 days until the games are over and until they get to meet their secret Santa face to face. Not all gifts come in the form of money, makeup or clothes some come in the form of friendships and maybe even love.Complete
