In the Pre-World, everyone got Stands by being born with them or being stabbed by a Stand Arrow.

Now... In the Post-World...

Your Stand is the embodiment of what killed you.

Or... At least what should've killed you.

Chances of what kills you to become your Stand are slim. Though many people may die the same way, there are some exceptions.

For example, if someone who died by... Radiation Poisoning by water and they obtain a Stand that is about Radioactive Water, if they died and someone were to die the same way, they have a chance of obtaining that Stand. But like I said, chances of what kills you to become your Stand are slim.
