After moving out of Hawkins, the Byers family find themselves in Erie, Pennsylvania, having to navigate through high school, leaving The Party to struggle with missing their friends, Mike most of all. Toss in a partner project, and Will has a new obstacle to tackle: a well-known musical rebel named Matéo Hernandez. But life is never that simple for them, as a group of teenagers from Russia who exhibit powers similar-but different, to El's own make an appearance. They're on the search for their siblings, and on the run from the danger of scientists and monstrous dogs that signs can only point to the upside down.
