John Murphy and Leanna Chang began as mere rumours to one another, all that changed when the life-support systems of the Ark had begun to fail and the pair were sent along with 98 other juvenile prisoners down to Earth by "The Council" in a final attempt to see if it was habitable.

Leanna grew up in the Mecha Station alongside her best friend, Raven Reyes and was raised by her mother before she was sent to the Sky Box charged with assault on an Ark Guard after the guard accused her of stealing rations.

On the Ground, she befriended the infamous Bellamy Blake and from then on grew unexpectedly closer to Bellamy's second-in-command, John Murphy, who at first just wanted to get lucky but was later charmed by her prickly personality. She tried her best not to fall in love with him, to conceal whatever she was feeling for him by keeping her distance.

John Murphy lived the earlier years of his life in the Farm Station with his parents before they passed away.

He was then locked up in the Sky Box for setting fire to an Ark Guard's quarters. Hung up with the burden of his rough past, Murphy looked to sarcasm as his coping mechanism. On the Ground, Murphy gained Bellamy's trust and became his second-in-command.
