John, the son of a music legend who died from the pressures of fame, vows not to repeat his father's mistakes. When his music shows potential, he hides his identity behind a mask of deception to escape growing attention. But the notoriety generated by the band's anonymity has unintended consequences, helping accelerate the band's growing stardom. For a time, John leads a double life, playing occasional concerts with "The Black Mask Band," while also trying to live a normal life and guard his secret. A paparazzi ambush after a show in London results in near disaster and marks the end of his touring days. Afterwards, he and his bandmates go their separate ways. Years later, a reporter discovers his identity by uncovering some of his song lyrics in a high school poetry contest submission. She agrees to work with the band to let them tell their story on their own terms. John and his bandmates reunite and prepare to gather friends and family under false pretenses to reveal their identity in one last concert. While preparing for the show, John also reintroduces himself to an old high school crush and tries to find out how she really feels about him, before fame interferes. The story is a sequel of sorts to A Star Is Born.
