(Listen, I don't care what others say I like both the Broadway and the movie version of Cats)
This takes place before the musical.
Lightning, a tiny munchkin mane coon Jellicle cat, was always under someones wing.. or in this case paw, how she went under Skimbleshank's paw was beyond her, when the time came for the Jellicle Ball, she was enchanted by the magician cat Mistoffeless who was in her eyes, charming and handsome. Maybe this ball was more then choosing who goes to the Heaviside Layer.
