Maddy Brooks is a misfortunate 17 year old girl. At home she lives with an abusive father her who belittles her with every waking chance he gets. School isn't any better for her either as it seem like she's pushed around and picked on by everyone who attends Northwood High. Maddy feels worthless, like a "nobody" and everyday she wakes up, she wishes she hadn't. She can't seem to see her future after high school, especially since her sister left when she was 9 and the beatings she received only became worse over the years.

Xavier Miller is Northwood High's typical "bad boy". No one disrespects him or even approaches him because they're too afraid of what he might do to them. However, behind closed doors Xavier isn't much different from Maddy as he struggles with many things life throws in his direction, some might even call him broken. He has many secrets, but so does she and for many years Xavier stood idly by as Nessa got bullied but as their Senior year begins he starts to take interest in her.
