Twee jaar later zit hij in Libië, Noord-Afrika en vecht hij tegen de Britten. Daar krijgt hij te horen dat zijn zoon zich vrijwillig heeft aangemeld voor militaire dienst en dat hij mee zal vechten in Operatie Barbarossa, in het 6e leger van Legergroep Zuid onder leiding van Walter von Reichenau. Wat hun te wachten staat weten ze niet, maar ze schrijven alles wat ze mee maken op in hun dagboek.
