The idea that addiction is a disease is a widely argued topic with huge supporters for either side. Addiction being a disease is a vast misconception from a portion of compiled studies that concluded it not as a disease, but a side effect of disease. Millions of people judge addicts as terrible and irresponsible without ever considering why or how they came to be that way. Not everyone was lucky enough to develop a calm mind from which escaping doesn't feel imperative.
