Maddie Long has loved playing the flute for as long as she can remember. Her mother always had a gift at music, singing Maddie to sleep, playing the piano at church, and being 1st chair at the state symphony. When her mother died of cancer, Maddie's world seemed to stop spinning. She became quiet, and more timid and spending all her time perfecting her talents on the piano, violin and flute so much that her fingers bled.
It's been years since her mother's death and Maddie is now living with her grandma and her husky mix, Patchy. When it's time for band camp, she jumps at the chance, thinking that it's the perfect opportunity to go back to her old self. But what happens when she hears someone playing one of the lullabies her mother sang to her when she had nightmares? And what happens when the boy has answers to her dark past, including the man who ran out on her mother?
David Sparrow has always loved playing the trumpet but never told anyone. He IS the school's bad boy after all. When he hears about band camp this summer, however, he's excited to go somewhere where no one knows him and create a new image of himself. Also he needed to get back to his old roots, before everything went wrong, like his best friend when he was a child... and maybe secret crush... But what happens when a pretty girl walks in on him playing a lullaby, that a childhood friend used to hum when she was scared? And what happens when that girl turns out to be his childhood friend?
"Maddie?"
