Everyone thinks they know the prophecy.

The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approaches
Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies
The dark lord shall mark them as his equal, but they shall have power the dark lord knows not
And either must die at the hand of the other, for neither can live while the other survives
The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approaches, born as the seventh month dies

What they don't know is that those were the twisted words of Dumbledore, the real prophecy being thus;

The one with power equal to the lords approaches
Born to those who have thrice defied the dark, born to the light as the seventh month dies
They will surpass both the lords, using powers the lords know not
And they must choose a side, or let the world fall into chaos
While neither man nor woman can restore balance, the one with equal power approaches
