The best laid plans... Marisa Clements was never satisfied writing the 'gossip column' in the local paper and she quit her job to follow her dream of writing fiction. Floundering in an unforgiving industry, she wrote about vampires, a popular subject she considered fascinating but as real as unicorns, to pay the rent. Corgan was tired of human misconceptions about vampires and 'living' as a vampire. He planned to tell Marisa his story and end his existence. It was no coincidence Corgan selected Marisa to write his story. With the ability to see the future, he knew she would be a major part of it. He knew if they met, she would help him die, but in doing so, she'd be doomed to the same fate. Once they met, their futures would be irrevocably intertwined. Corgan began to care for Marisa and finally revealed the truth to her. He admitted his quest to atone for his past sins had put her in grave danger from a nest of revenge seeking vampires. Corgan must claim her for her own protection. But claiming her is not enough, he must ask for help from his wizard friends and his maker in order to destroy his enemy or Marisa will never be safe.

Dawn can not wait for her date to be over. It's really not going well in her opinion and even worse when Craig takes her to an underground fighting ring. One where you can place bets on people that are in a type of cage match. This is not Dawn's cup of tea and she really wished she'd have called it earlier than saying yes to him and his friends. When Dawn steps away from the fighting for a moment to give aide to one of the fighters, she doesn't realize that her choice might have just saved her life. Or at the very least give her an edge to survive. Shortly after leaving the fights Dawn and her group are attacked, drugged and kidnapped. They are going to be unwilling participants in a game for the rich to place bets on their lives. Dawn soon learns that the fighter she stopped to help is also here. However he is not one of the unwitting victims. He is their control factor, their executioner if they do not follow and play this deadly high stakes game. What's more he isn't even really human, but her actions of the aide given, have drawn Lucian's attention. After all he's been told he can choose the one that survives. It's easy to pick when someone is kind for once instead of cruel. Then again how kind can someone stay when the cost of being forgiving will end your life? How do you trust that giving someone what they want won't just have them toss you aside to die when all is said and done?
