Diana Westenra does not fit in the small city that saw her grow up. A self-declared spinster with an unhealthy curiosity, a strong opinion and a library to match, the young woman has failed for years in the only task her family gave her: securing a suitable husband.
With her hopes withered after spending time in France, she comes back to Purfleet to care for her sick mother and organize the marriage of Lucy, her younger sister, already engaged to a gentleman. There, new and old friendships await.
But a monster arrives in England and sinks her family into despair, changing her life forever.
