Crescent View is a boring, trashy small town full of grumpy adults and mischievous teens, where nothing ever happens, and the most abnormal thing is why people stay. Macy Miller is a sixteen-year-old girl who has spent her entire life in this dump of a town. When her parents sent her away to a Catholic boarding school, she couldn't have been happier to get out of Crescent View.
After she returns the next summer, she realizes how much has changed since she's been gone. Her sister, her friends, and even the crappy pizza from the diner down the street had changed (it somehow tastes even worse than it did before). The biggest change, however, is the cute girl who had just moved into the old house next door, which had been vacant for over a decade. Desperate to enjoy the summer before having to return to the boarding school, Macy befriends the new girl, Parker, and the two of them make plans to have the best summer they can.
Things aren't quite normal in Crescent View, however. People start disappearing, and bodies start turning up in the forest, labelled as animal attacks. When one of Macy's old friends ends up in the hospital from one of said attacks, they realize that these deaths are definitely not animal attacks, and something has to be done about it.
When the police fail them, Macy and her friends band together to get to the bottom of whatever is happening in that forest. Hunting a demon isn't what Macy had in mind when planning her summer, but at this point, she'll take any excitement she can get.
