It all began in a world by the name of Geminate, In this world there are two of everybody, one person for each side. The sides are separated by a man made wall roughly a mile thick. The sides of the world are meant to represent the sides of the human brain. The left side of the wall is the logical side, so it consists of kingdoms and warriors in suits of armor. The right is meant to represent the creativity in humans, so it's very futuristic, This side contains inventions such as flying cars and android assistants.
In this world everybody has a double, although there is an exception, some children are born as one. In this case they're called no-sides and are treated as outcasts from society. Due to the last name given to them at birth, they can not hide their identity. If a no-side gets married their last name does change, but with a cost. Their partner and them must sit in a soundproof room surrounded by their true fears for ten minutes. All would be ok if it weren't for the case of Austin and Skylar.
