By the Edge of the Lake

The smile is the first thing that she sees and it is blinding in a way she didn't know was possible. She doesn't look away - doesn't want to.
"Let's be friends!" The voice is bright and clear like light glancing off water in the distance. She finds a small smile growing on her face too, pale reflection of the one in front of her but no less meant.
The other girl giggles happily.
"I'm Grace. What's your name?"
Her smile slips away.
Her name?
It's not that she can't remember.
It's that there is nothing to remember.
