When sixteen-year-old, recently orphaned Link Preston comes to live with his estranged best friend Echo in Cornwall, England, he finds himself in the middle of an ancient mystery that holds the small coastal village in fear. It has a lot to do with science, and also with the ocean, and with growing up, and possibly the mysterious, alluring Adeline who wanders the moors and sea cliffs. Possibly.

After choosing the latter in a risky gamble, both her and the boy might be in for more than they bargained for when they discover the city is under attack. Will they be able to save it and the people in it in time, or will following the boy be a big mistake?
