Out on the open sea, an animus-created continent stays holding hundreds of thousands of dragon, who all ran from the horrors of phyria for peace with the tribes. Amongst them, Ebony, a tiny 8 year old (16 in dragon years) nightwing-rainwing hybrid lives along the shores. But when a strange seawing throws a rock at her horn-bangle, shattering it, chaos emerges in her life as she discovers her animus powers, and that this "perfect" continent is filled with horrors.

She arrives at sundown with a seemingly fake reason for being late. It throws Sunny, her adopted aunt, into worry as it seems her niece has changed. But why? And why does she keep having visions of nothing but pitch blackness? Did something happen to her niece? And what will happen when a bully Skywing keeps making her doubt that being a hybrid is somehow wrong? Will Spirit be able to recover her regular self or will she give up and become a doormat? And how will a secret admirer come into play? Especially when Spirit begins to get more visions of strange giant creatures deep within the ocean.
