Australia is currently experiencing one of the largest natural disasters in history. This year fire season has brought about unprecendented destruction as wildfires have spread across every Australian state, burning up nearly 6 million hectares (15 million acres) of bush as of January 2020. But the devastation witnessed in the state of New South Wales is nearly unfathomable - 3.6 million hectares (8.8 million acres) have been lost, over 1,500 homes destroyed or damaged, and 24 people have been killed. Climate change does not cause bushfires, but it does make them worse. Australia is a land of bushfires but this season's bushfire catastrophe is not normal. Australia has been experiencing more frequent intense heatwaves and prolonged dry periods that have created tinder box conditions. Global heating is making droughts and fires hotter and more frequent as we have seen this season. "How much of our country has to burn, how many lives have to be lost, homes destroyed before we resolve as a nation to act on climate change? Now, We should take care of our mother nature and we must all do our bit to protect our world from climate disaster - failure to act will make extreme weather standard, with deadly consequences for people and nature.Tous Droits Réservés
