Being born from the womb or seed of a vampire doesn't automatically mean you become one.
I learned that first hand.
Before my father bit me, I was fine. I had no craving for blood, not in that respect anyway, my skin didn't turn red and blistered the moment it hit sunlight. For a while, we were the perfect Italian family. We were Catholic. Father would never attend Mass with us, but I didn't question why. We were happy...
Then, the war hit.
Mama got captured, but through the pity of Uncle Poseidon, the rest of us managed escape to America before things got even worse.
We were motherless children. A widowed father.
We were American. Nothing else. We couldn't be anything else. We now had to learn English, reserve our mother tongue for closed doors, or else they'd think we were German spies. The small bits and pieces Mama left behind had to be hidden.
It only got worse when Bianca drowned in the lake by our house. She was fishing with our uncle, the boat tipped over... He tried to save her, but it was too late.
The last Christmas Eve I spent as a mortal was just... Insulting. This was supposed to be a time of love and joy and family. But I was lonely, and bitter. So was father.
That night, he took me into the forest by our house, and sat down with me in a clearing. I'll never forget the words that followed. He took a deep breath.
"... Nico... Please forgive me, but I know the pain you're in. And the thought of you succumbing to it... I can't bear it." He held me. "... So... Forgive me for this."
And he bit me.
And I was never the same.
