The Airbender avatar died when the fire nation attacked the air temples and in the 100 years, the war has been going on the next two avatars both died, not knowing their status.  
When young Prince Zuko had to fight an Agni Kai with his father, Fire Lord Ozai, he accidentally used air bending to defend himself.  It has been three years since his father locked him in a secret fire nation prison on the south pole.
