Frank and Faye Riley are an elderly New York City couple living in a depressed part of town. There, they run a diner as well as an apartment building, which is home to a poor but friendly group of people. One of them was an 18-year-old teenage girl named Amanda Thomson with her 3-year-old baby sister Emma who had lost there parents in a car crash the year before. With nowhere to go and because the Riley's we're friends with the girl's parents they decided to let them live in one of there apartments.

One day, Frank and Faye learn that a property developer and Social Services wants them to move out so they can tare the apartment down to make room for skyscrapers and to take Emma away so she can be put in an orphanage because they don't think Amanda is good enough to take care of Emma on her own. When they refuse, their diner is vandalized by a teenage punk named Carlos and his friends. However, Frank, Faye and their tenants are aided by mysterious flying saucers like aliens who had landed on Earth to recharge but they see what was happening so they decided to stay and help the people by repairing the diner.
