There is a reason why Matt Donovan and Elena Gilbert broke up. After making out with Matt at a party, which turned into sex, Elena found out that she's pregnant, a few days later. Once Elena got the news, she immediately broke up with Matt, and she convinced her parents to let her live with her aunt Jenna during the pregnancy since she doesn't have the money to abort the child, and her parents wouldn't let her have one. Nine months later, on January 15, 2009, Elena gives birth to a beautiful girl. 

A week later, Elena comes back to Mystic Falls, but when she did, she told her parents that she gave her child up for adoption. What they didn't know is that Elena gave her up to her biological father. At night, when Matt came home from work, he gets shocked when he sees a baby girl on his doorsteps. When Matt took the infant inside, his heart breaks when he reads a letter that the baby is his daughter and that Elena does not want to be her mother. 

On that same night, Matt decided to name is biological daughter, Heaven Victoria Donovan.
