But he wants to actually make a difference in the world, instead of training for a mission that'll never come. So when he and his insane best friend get assigned to track down Persephone, who's supposedly gone rogue, he jumps at the chance... except that taking it opens up a whole new set of dangers.
And Ferra Raden doesn't want to be chosen, period. She hates the fact that she's split-pantheon and only half-elf, she hates the fact that her and her sibling's extra-strong powers make them a target for bullying, and she hates the fact that no matter how hard she tries, she can't be normal. So when she and her siblings discover their family's secret, Ferra's not surprised to find that normal flies out the window. She doesn't want to go on a quest, but it doesn't look like there's another option.
