After Johnny was discharged from the hospital because of the church fire, he had to go to court. Pony ended up being acquitted but Johnny wasn't so lucky. Even though he acted in self-defense, he was still sent to jail for a couple of months. After those tiring months in the slammer, Johnny decided to take a break from Tulsa and leave for California for 2 years. During that time, he realized that he was gay and how much he loved Ponyboy. Once he returned to Tulsa, he saw how different Pony looked, and different in a good way.
