Along the shore, where the black trees of Burnt Forest meet the Red Sea, bloated corpses spot the sandy beach. Baby whales, giant fish with bone-white teeth, and dolphins lay like offerings on the shore, their eyes gone, their thick skin crisping in the hot sun.
Rey has seen this before, years ago when he entered the Red lands, a young Grey warrior trying to save his people from Lady Red.
The people believe Lady Red long dead, a bad memory whose wake has just begun to still. But Rey knows the signs, knows Lady Red never died, only sleeps. He reaches out a clawed hand to touch the man's face. It's soft and smooth. Mingi is as captivated as the human seems to be and for a split second, the man's eyes are lucid. They are lucid and Mingi realizes he's stopped singing. His voice escapes him and his song dies in his throat and he doesn't even notice until San's voice is gone too and with it, the spell keeping the human obedient and still.
