Cette nouvelle est un parallèle à la nouvelle parue plutôt : SCANDALE ! qui faisait référence elle, à la triste vie d'un homme qui n'a pas fait ce qu'il aurait voulu faire, assis sur une chaise en regardant sa vie défilé. A travers cette nouvelle histoire, le narrateur va raconter ce qu'était le monde en y ajoutant ses regrets, ses visions du futur avant qu'il ne finisse en un tas de cendre...
