The duties of the captains vary somewhat depending on the type of ship they command. For example, there are boat captains, ferry captains, tugboat captains and rental boat captains.

However, all captains typically command the ship's crew and determine the speed of the ship, set the course of the trip, use depth measuring equipment, calculate the position of the ship, dock and unlock ships, and use cards, compasses and area plot sheets.
