It's 1967 and Penny Ward is a Sixteen-year-old Kentucky high school student who was homeschooled due to the trauma of her mother killing herself as she jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge, and her father being an alcoholic deadbeat. When Penny moves in with her grandparents from Greenwood, Mississippi to Georgetown, Kentucky, Penny continues her steady home school education. But that's not all she's doing. As the woods in Georgetown are accessible, Penny explores the outdoors climbing trees and running in the forest. 

Though this Peculiar teen isn't alone. After running through the forest and witnessing a tragic tradition such as fox hunting, Penny saves the life of a baby fox and nurses the baby to health. Acting as it's the mother. After the encounter, Penny decides she will go to fight for the rights of animals, such as the foxes and bobcats. 
But she's in for a real treat when she realizes, it's not about how good your cause is, but about who you know.
