In Kenj, magic means death. No one knows that better than Sera. So when she discovers her younger sister Kenna is a witch, Sera vows to protect her at all costs. Then, a local boy accuses Sera of witchcraft. In order to save her sister from being burned at the stake, Kenna uses her magic to free her, exposing her secret. And their village is not happy.
The two girls flee, vanishing into the woods with nothing but the clothes on their back and some embers of untamed magic. When they encounter a band of thieves trying to buy their way across the border, Sera and Kenna think they have found their way out. But the thieves have their own dark pasts, and Kenna's magic holds many mysteries. Can Sera and Kenna save themselves from a world determined to kill them, or are they fated to burn on the pyre?
