Epic fantasy from the author of The Nameless Dwarf. Cadman's Gambit is the first book of the Shader series.

The exiled scientist Sektis Gandaw has searched for thousands of years for the artifact he needs to unweave all creation. When he finally detects a trace of its power, he sends his flesh-eating minions to claim it.

Pitted against him is the holy knight, Deacon Shader, veteran of the wars against the undead armies of the Liche Lord, and prepared for this task since the day he was born. The only problem is, Shader is done with fighting, and desires only a life of quiet contemplation. At least that's what he tells himself.

While cosmic forces battle it out for the fate of all existence, a former pupil of the Liche Lord, Dr Cadman, stumbles upon the artifact and decides to throw centuries of caution to the wind. After all, it's not really much of a choice: a half-life leeching off the blood of others, or the perfect immortality promised by this mysterious power from beyond the stars.

Welcome, traveler. Step into the Crownless Lands-a realm that should have been golden but never was. The maps still show grand borders; the songs still promise glory. But up close you'll find frayed banners, broken vows, and people trying to live between the teeth of history. Here, adventurers hunt fortunes that refuse to be found. Heroes rise late or fall early. Lives are traded, stolen, and sometimes-miraculously-saved. And the creatures? Some stalk the roads and terrorize the villages. Others arrive with a lesson sharp as a blade. And the kingdom's worst monsters wear crowns made of lies. --- What You're Getting Into: A weekly high/dark-fantasy pulp serial-fast, moody, full of intrigue, sorcery, and razor twists. Each episode lands a complete beat and ends on a cliffhanger. Where It All Unravels: A continent under a failing crown: forts crumble, roads go quiet, new rules harden. Towns and frontiers fend for themselves-more grit than resources. Bloodlines, Beasts & the In-Between: Shifts among humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, and classic creatures-some scourge, some uneasy allies. How the Story Moves: Chapters leap across the map, braiding many plots into one struggle. Local skirmishes mirror the bigger fight for a crown no one can hold. The People Worth Bleeding For: An ensemble of adventurers, exiles, heirs, and schemers. Not every arc finds light-some rise late, fall early, or trade all for one mercy. Your Weekly Drop: New chapters every Thursday, 6-10k words. Each deepens the world, sharpens the cast, and drives the saga-great for weeklies and first-timers. Important Note: The story follows multiple destinies; chapters are non-sequential and jump between plots across the Crownless Lands.

Fifty years ago, demons invaded the mortal realm of Dargon, leaving a trail of destruction across the five kingdoms. The six Guardians of that generation united the kingdoms and fought back against the demons, scattering their ashes to the winds. Then, they vanished into legend, and with them, their powers. When the lost powers awaken in six strangers across the mortal realm once again, they seek answers... What danger has compelled the powers to reappear after half a century of peace? There are rumours that another demon army gathers in the fiery realm of the Abyss, greater than the first and led by a cunning mastermind whose motivations are unknown. But something doesn't add up. The deeper they dig, the more twisted the truth becomes and the more uncertain their path forward. Who... or what must they truly save their world from? As destinies unravel and loyalties are tested, one question lingers: What if saving the world... means trusting the very force that could end it? An epic trilogy of gods, mortals, and fates intertwined-where it seems that things may have been set in motion long before anyone could ever have anticipated and the path forward may just be the one that ends in death. Another Stupid Spell by billricardi
20 parts Complete
Another Stupid Spell is a first person high fantasy novel, the likes of which hasn't been seen in 60 years. The tone and vocabulary of the story shifts as our narrator, Sorch the orc, finds ways to enhance his intelligence. You get to grow as Sorch grows, learn as he learns, and share his most intimate thoughts. Sorch is an orc mage in a world where orcs are cursed with stupidity every time they cast a spell. The only spell he can safely cast is Enhance Intelligence, which boosts his IQ for a fraction of a second before the curse drains it all away again. Normally casting such a spell would be pointless, but Sorch's tribe has found a way to benefit. Magic that is cast near a mysterious artefact called the 'Voodoo Engine' causes invisible hands to appear, and these hands get work done for his tribe. Sorch is a slave to the Voodoo Engine, casting a single spell over and over again to avoid being beaten by the chief's warrior caste. While foraging for food on one fateful night, our hero happens upon two human mages who are in big trouble. He saves their lives, and in return they give him an amulet that will make his life easier. Unbeknownst to the humans, their gift grants Sorch the power to break the cycle of intelligence drain and physical abuse. With the help of his friend and mentor, Shaman, Sorch becomes a real mage. Sorch leaves his swamp and embarks on a series of incredibly exciting and dangerous adventures. During his travels he encounters horrible injury, magical treasures, love, snow, university admissions tests, a plot against the Kingdom, and then of course he saves the world. Or does he? Be prepared to rethink everything you know about thinking. If your own intelligence was the fuel that your magic ran on, how brightly would you dare to burn?
