Naomi has never been outside of the two-room apartment where she and her mother are kept, and the only window is a small skylight in her bedroom. The only love she has ever known was from her mother, who taught her to read by scratching letters into the wood floor underneath their mattress. When The Man gets too drunk one night and strikes her mother dead in a fit of rage, Naomi flees to a meadow far away, where she spends the night gazing at the wonderous stars.
Soon she is accompanied by an odd boy, who later on gives her a very important choice.
