That's all Lance wants, he doesn't want to be afraid...of anything. He doesn't want to be afraid of going on missions, to train with everyone, to hurt anyone or to get hurt.
In order for any of that he has to cut off everything he is.
The way his teammates act around him makes him think his change is for the better, even tho it takes everything he has to not to break.
Tho breaking is exactly what is happening and it only comes to everyone's mind when it's two late.

I suck at descriptions. Oh well here goes. Lance is 'always the reason' why the team fails training and barely complete missions. So when Allura tries memory-melding to get the paladin to bond, it reveals a small part of Lance's painful past. From there, Lance's daily life aboard The Castle of Lions goes spiraling out of control, and he's forced to deal with the consequences, whether it was his fault or not. IDK please give it a go?
