No, "jerk" cannot be the "closest word" for "paasa." :3

A person who is "paasa"... "gives false hope."

"Jerk" is defined as a contemptibly obnoxious person. Yes people who give false hope are jerks but it CANNOT be an equivalent or translation of paasa. It just simply doesn't have an equivalent in English.

When we say "He is paasa," we know what he did. He gave false hope in some way. But when we say "He is a jerk," that's a whole other thing. He is "a contemptibly obnoxious person." What did he do that made him a jerk? Maybe he did something else instead of specifically giving false hope. Hmm.

So you turned something specific (paasa, one who gives false hope) into something broad (jerk), and doing that is something rather undesirable.

might even mean "false intentions" depending on how some people use it.

i do agree "jerk" is very vague and could mean a lot of other things. like "pasaway" "salbahe" "bastos" etc etc,. depending on the situation. tagalog is very specific and direct, people often ask "anung ibig mong sabihin" or "what do you mean" if your too broad 😁
