Nicholas Vale, who, since a pup, has lived with his aunt, June. This is due to the fact that his parents, Thomas and Lilley Vale, had been killed in a plane crash, leaving him stuck with his aunt. Now, Nick is seventeen, hanging out with his girlfriend, Allison, and applying for a job at the WMC, or Weapons Manufacturing , Center. After having his application declined, his only other option for a job is to take an apprenticeship from his aunt June in running her restaurant, "The Open Book". But before he can decide how to bring it up to her, he gets an envelope with a letter inside saying that the WMC had decided to give him a chance. Days later he's on his way to the facility, when he gets jumped, but it's not homeless beggars trying to steal his stuff, these people are after Nick, and have been for some time. Nick gets drugged abd brought to some giant warehouse full of empty beds, aside from his. Later, they take him to a man named Mr. White. Mr. White explains to Nick that they aren't dead, nor alive, but somewhere in between, and they plan on making him the same. Two of his attackers haul him out of Mr.white's office and bring him into the room full of beds. after failing to open the door, he lays in a bed a falls into a fitful sleep, where he meets a mysterious woman cloaked in black mist, standing in front of him, as if watching him. He wakes up not only to see that he is still in the kidnapper's hideout, but that he is now hearing voices.
