Forensics 101

Jack Rhodes should have been ordinary. But twenty-five years ago something happened which left him with anger which he struggles to contain whenever he comes across injustice.
Intellectually, this is channeled into his consultancy work as a forensic auditor for global corporates. Physically with rigorous and ongoing fighting training. Emotionally with layers of cynicism and skepticism. Not an everyman package. It allows him to cope with what is a form of PTSD.
Jack is now 30. His consultancy work takes him all over the world and is well paid. Recently back in his home town of San Francisco, what seems like a one-night stand with Debbie, leads him into the world of marginally crooked real estate dealings, strip clubs, money laundering, and a clever Ponzi scheme which is on the verge of going global. Through fear, Debbie fled.
In resolving all this he falls into an unexpected relationship with Stella, a wealthy older widow whose husband was an unknowing victim of the Ponzi scheme. Together they solve part of the puzzle but without Debbie, they don't have all the pieces.
In the background of all this is his intellectual cousin Freddie, whose parents raised Jack. Freddie is a lawyer who runs a specialized unit within SFPD. Sargent Freddie Braithwaite is in the same unit and an instructor in different fighting techniques at SFPD. Together they are a moral compass for Jack.
This journey is not smooth and is risky. People get killed.
It is a story of people who are fractured to some degree, like all of us. It does not end as Jack had planned.
No matter what we do it changes us a little and makes s wonder about the future.
