In 1910, the Union of South Africa was created out of the Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Free State. It was to be essentially a white union. Black opposition was inevitable, and the African National Congress (ANC) was founded in 1912 to protest the exclusion of black people from power.Nelson Mandela was a social rights activist, politician and philanthropist who became South Africa's first black president from 1994 to 1999. After becoming involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20s, Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1942.South Africa, the southernmost country on the African continent, renowned for its varied topography, great natural beauty, and cultural diversity, all of which have made the country a favoured destination for travelers since the legal ending of apartheid Afrikaans: "apartness," or racial separation in 1994. Desmond Tutu is one of South Africa's most well-known human rights activists, winning the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in resolving and ending apartheid. Born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal, South Africa, he became the first Black Anglican Archbishop of both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Zuma is also referred to by his initials JZ and his clan name Msholozi. Miriam Makeba, in full Zensi Miriam Makeba, born March 4, 1932, Prospect Township, near Johannesburg, South Africa-died November 10, 2008, Castel Volturno, near Naples, Italy, South African-born singer who became known as Mama Afrika, one of the world's most prominent black African performers in the 20th century.
