At age seventeen, for everyone in Edina, a supposed utopia kingdom, every sixteen year old makes the trek to Florye, the kingdom’s prized coliseum. Out of the thousands of young adults there, four are chosen: two boys and two girls. Strangely, only the poor are taken. Those in Airien, where the most privileged live, are never chosen, but in the Middlelands and Forest, there’s an equal chance for everyone. No one knows where they’re taken, but it doesn’t matter because the families of the chosen are heralded and rewarded with fame, money and glory. They are moved to the Airien, where they will spend the rest of their lives without their son or daughter.
Ava Ylisse lives in the Forest and sees no point in this “wonderful” event. No one ever questions where those teens disappear off to, but she does. Come to think of it, she’s never really fit the mold of a good town girl, which doesn’t live up to her parents unrealistic standards.
Her family is anything but happy and ecstatic when she gets chosen. Why? Because she was the fifth person named. But the tension doesn’t stop there. What happens when she uncovers the kingdom’s secret?
