Moxie doesn't think dragons are real. Not until she's turned into one.

A mysterious old woman tells Moxie that far away, in a hidden world, dragons roam free. Of course, Moxie doesn't believe her. But while on a trip with her father to the island of Berk, she meets a man named Hiccup that tells her what the woman said was true. Again, Moxie denies the beasts' existence. Then, just before her trip back home, she's given a strange drink by Hiccup's wife, Astrid. She doesn't think anything of it; Astrid was just being hospitable. Then she wakes up with wings and a tail.

Moxie is terrified, and feels like she's hopeless. She realizes dragons ARE real, and she's lost among them without any friends. Then comes Xayli. A handsome Nightfury with scales blacker than ebony and eyes greener than emerald. Moxie soon finds herself drawn to Xayli and Xayli helps her find her way in the world of dragons. In the end, Moxie is unsure whether to remain a Lightfury or go back to being a human.
